Prominent Ear Deformity Correction

When ears protrude from the scalp or are too prominent, they can be distracting and impact the overall appearance of the individual. Many prominent ear deformities are noticeable at birth as a congenital defect. There are options for correcting prominent ear deformities, from non-surgical treatments that can be done with newborns to plastic surgery as adults. Dr. Rousso has vast experience in altering ear deformities in children and adults to create an appearance that is balanced with their other features.

The simplest option for some prominent ear deformities is to undergo ear molding as newborns. Many prominent or misshaped ears can be reshaped in the first weeks after birth. The cartilage is more flexible and pliable during the first two months, allowing it to be shaped without surgery. Dr. Rousso uses the EarWell advanced molding device to correct prominent ear deformities in newborns when possible. This can prevent the need for otoplasty or other corrective surgeries later in life.

Otoplasty or Ear Pinning Options

For those with prominent ear deformities that are five years of age or older, otoplasty or ear pinning surgery can be used. These procedures can be used to pull the ears closer to the scalp or to reshape the ears, improving the appearance. While this can be performed in adults, early modification of prominent ears may be beneficial for the emotional well-being of the child. Reducing “Dumbo” ears with plastic surgery at an early age prevents the bullying and teasing that occurs that can be difficult for children.

While prominent ears are not a health issue, they can impact the appearance and self-confidence of the individual throughout their life. Dr. Rousso offers surgical and non-surgical options to correct this deformity to improve the aesthetic appearance of his patients of all ages.
